May is Asthma Awareness Month

One out of 10 children nationally suffers  from asthma resulting in more  than 10.5 million missed school days each year in children aged 5 to 17. As part of a state initiative to decrease health disparities, The Boston Public Health Commission and  neighborhood health centers in Mattapan , Roxbury and Dorchester are working with school nurses in the 27 schools in those neighborhoods to improve asthma management and decrease absenteeism . With the right management, monitoring and supports most children with asthma can participate in sports, walk to school and do most anything other children can do. You can use the items in CDC’s Asthma Awareness Month Toolkit to take control of and raise awareness about asthma.
